The Minister of Land Transport and Light Rail, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, Mr Alan Ganoo, and the Minister of Social Integration, Social Security and National Solidarity, Mrs Fazila Jeewa-Daureeawoo, co-chaired a meeting, this morning, in Port Louis, to discuss the assistance that could be extended to Türkiye and Syria following the earthquakes that hit both countries.
It is recalled that on 06 February 2023, south-eastern Türkiye and northern Syria were hit by earthquakes causing heavy casualties with loss of lives and extensive damages.
The meeting was attended by representatives of various ministries and institutions. It took stock of the humanitarian situation in Türkiye and Syria where people in the affected area were in urgent need of shelter, food and medical aid. Discussions focused as well on the ways and means to mobilise local companies for the provision of emergency medical supplies and equipment.
The main proposal outlined during the meeting was the holding of a national fund-raising initiative, a Teledon, whereby the Mauritian population would be invited to donate in solidarity with the people of Türkiye and Syria. The event would be held next week and would require the collaboration of numerous stakeholders. Dedicated bank account to raise money to support relief activities for people in Türkiye and Syria would also be opened.
