Sabr

Sabr (صَبْرٌ), is one of the two parts of faith (the other being shukr) in Islam.

It teaches to remain spiritually steadfast and to keep doing good actions in the personal and collective domain, specifically when facing opposition or encountering problems, setbacks, or unexpected and unwanted results. It is patience in the face of all unexpected and unwanted outcomes.

Imam ‘Ali (As) said, “The Messenger of Allah (SWT) said:

Sabr is of three kinds” :

  1. Sabr at the time of affliction,
  2. Sabr in regard to obedience, and Sabr in regard to disobedience (of Allah).
  3. And the third one is superior to the first two kinds.

Imam ‘Ali (a) said:

The one who practices Sabr will never be deprived of success, even though it may take a long time.”

In the Qur’an, there’s one thing which we are assured about and that is those who are patient will be given a reward without measure.

Surah Baqarah Ayah 153

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اسْتَعِينُو
ا بِالصَّبْرِ وَالصَّلَاةِ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ مَعَ الصَّابِرِينَ

O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.

Narrated Abu Huraira:

Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said, “If Allah wants to do good to somebody, He afflicts him with trials.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 5645
